Young Advisors
Heywood Young Advisors
The Young Advisors had a development session with the one and only Leslie Silverlock to work specifically on how Heywood Young Advisors can work locally to bring about change in the area. The training was extremely beneficial to all involved and re-energised us for future projects in the new year.
The Northern Sustainability Forum provided the Young Advisors with free training in Social Enterprise and Creative Engagement.
An enjoyable day which gave us all lots to think about for the future and a variety of resources to use for work with both young people and adults.
The Young Advisors attended a Child Protection Training day.
They learnt about the different services involved in child protection such as social services, and how you would use different services for the best interest of the young person or child. This was a useful tool as Young Advisors come in contact with young people all the time and for a variety of reasons; whether it's for research or for their opinions.
The Young Advisors learnt about confidentiality and also about how to report different situations and how the process works.
All the Young Advisors and other young people from around Rochdale spent a weekend training on how to commision and what commisioning is all about.
We all worked together to learn and understand about commisioning is and what it is used for. Commisioning plays a very important part in the role of a Young Advisor as we use commisioning all the time for different projects and the commisioning training is not only important in the role of a Young Advisor but also in everyday life.
The Young Advisors are now qualified to commision other projects in and around Heywood. We have already commisioned a participation project (please go to past projects to veiw our evidence). The Young Advisors and the young people that attended the training were the first young people nationally to do the commissioning training - but they won't be the last.
The Young Advisors have taken part in a Level 2 Peer Mentoring Course.
The course was a three day course with Jenny Kennedy and was based at Woodland Primary School.
Other young people from Heywood also joined us in this course and seemed to enjoy it. We have now used our Peer Mentoring to work with siblings and other young people from the Heywood BRAG programme.
Peer Mentoring helps you to understand a young person more and also helps you in one-to-one situations. The young person can feel comfortable around you as he/she knows it is all confidential.
This course gave us an insight and education on Cannabis use; informing us of tips and facts on how we could advise our clients (young people) to safely use the drug and of its dangers - overall this was a really fun course.
Some of the Heywood team attended a two day training course on lifesaving first aid and there are now qualified first aiders on the team so you will always feel safe!
In February 2008, the Young Advisors went to Scotland for team building and to work on the CWDC work. This trip really brought the team together and helped them learn about one another. During the time there the Young Advisors did various outdoor activities which helped the team come together including High Ropes, Low Ropes, Gorge Walking and Kayaking. It was a fun trip and we hope to see more of these in the future!
Our Young Advisors attended the National Young Advisors Carnival in Birmingham on 11th February 2008, so click below for footage from that event! Look out for Paige, Liam and Rory at 3 minutes 30 seconds, and a photo of the full group at 6 minutes 23!
All of our Young Advisors attend the National Training as part of their induction into being a Young Advisor. Below are images of our first group of Young Advisors at their training at Trafford Hall.
